E/S Orcelle

E/S Orcelle is a concept for an environmentally sound car carrier. This future concept will contribute to the protection of ecologically important marine ecosystems and the earth’s atmosphere, by using alternative energy and eliminating emissions. It was first exhibited at the World Expo 2005, in Aichi, Japan.

E/S Orcelle Star Profile

The vessel is a car carrier expressing the environmental vision of Wallenius Wilhelmsen. Not limited by existing technologies, the concept pushes the boundaries for what could be possible in 2025. The vessel is named after the Orcelle dolphin, which WWF, the global conservation organisation includes among its critically endangered species.

The hull is built on a pentamaran design

The starting point for the vessel concept development is the assumption that in the future, we will not use oil to fuel car carriers. Yet, this vessel will have optimum cargo capacity, with significantly lower energy consumption per transported unit.

The pentamaran concept uses multiple alternative energy generators, including fuel cells, solar, wind, and wave power for propulsion. This, together with no ballast water requirement, and no emission, makes this car carrier the first ever E/S – Environmentally sound Ship. Read more about it here.

A presentation of the concept from the exhibition “Why Design Now“, The National Design Triennial in New York, 2010.
